Tourism in Tasmania is nearly all about its natural attractions. In the midlands you will find the Lake St Clair National park, Cradle Mountain National Park and the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. These three pristine regions combine sensational scenery with a close contact with the islands unique wildlife. This is the place to meet a Tasmanian Devil or a Wombat in its natural habitat or take a fly rod and visit one of the local rivers or lakes to catch a large brown or rainbow trout. The west coast of Tasmania is totally unique. The only towns here are Queenstown and Strachen and they lie near the mouth of the Gordon and Franklin River systems on MacQaurie harbour. From here you can take either a day cruise or an extended cruise along the river systems and into the magnificent wilderness region. You will see the famous Huon Pine in its natural state which is one of the worlds oldest trees. The east coast is the total opposite. It is a beautiful rural area,with picturesque coastal scenery and quaint fishing villages spread along its length. Places like Wineglass Bay are among the icons of the islands magnificent scenery. The north coast is superb. Tall native eucalyptus forests date back eons in time and cities like Launceston and Devonport provide excellent hotel accommodation for travelers. Throughout Tasmania you will constantly be reminded of the convict ancestry of Tasmania. A superbly built stone bridge, a beautiful stone farmhouse or relics of the past that have been preserved like the ruins of the first convict settlement at Port Arther on the Tasman Peninsula.
There is so much to see in Tasmania that it is easy to spend a couple of weeks traveling around from hotel to hotel while you soak up the beauty and the history of the magnificent Tasmanian countryside.
